Four-Fold Doors Improve Wind Rating and TOC
Fire Station | Government & Municipality
Problem
A county fire department was building a new fire and EMS station. Their older stations had a mixture of high speed and rolling doors. The county wanted to standardize to one type of door and reduce cost of ownership for the life of the doors at all of their fire stations, but the doors still needed to open and close quickly.
Solution
DH Pace presented four-fold doors – an alternative type of door that opens horizontally like a closet door, without the need for springs or counterbalances, instead of vertically like their previous doors. The four-fold doors are high speed, with an average opening speed of 24 inches per second, to meet the fire stations’ rigorous emergency needs. Furthermore, they can operate with damage, such as from a vehicle backing into them, and are easily opened and closed manually, so they won’t hinder a life safety response while waiting for repairs or during a power outage. The doors meet 120psf wind pressure and feature 1" Level E impact-rated glass to withstand Category 5 hurricanes and tornado conditions, making them ideal for all areas of the country.
The result is doors with a lower total cost of ownership that also meet the needs of emergency responders and the county without sacrificing operation speed or wind resistance.
